Created in 2008, Chichibu Japanese single malt whisky is already highly regarded among Japanese whisky enthusiasts and whisky connoisseurs worldwide. Entirely produced at the distillery—and, for some expressions, increasingly using local barley, peat and even Japanese oak casks—Chichibu is steadily moving toward its ambition of becoming the first truly 100% Japanese whisky. This vision is driven by the dedication of its founder, Ichiro Akuto. Fermented in vats made of mizunara, a highly prized variety of Japanese oak, and distilled in small stills, the spirit demonstrates remarkable maturity and complexity, even at a young age. A beautifully crafted whisky.

When Chichibu unveiled The First Ten in 2020, its oldest official bottling at the time, it marked a pivotal moment in the history of Japanese whisky—a milestone achieved through relentless dedication and patience, and one that few could have imagined just a few decades earlier. Today, Chichibu moves beyond The First Ten with the release of Chichibu Aged 10 Years, a powerful statement that this artisanal distillery is now firmly established and has built a confident reserve of mature stocks. This new expression also introduces a refined, contemporary label design bearing the signature “The Artisan Distillery Est. 2008.”

Colour: deep, luminous gold approaching amber, with intense golden highlights.

Nose: immediately generous and seductive, displaying creamy honey and melted vanilla confectionery, evocative of fine artisanal sweets. Gradually, a fresh and lightly exotic fruitiness emerges—Japanese loquat, ripe pineapple and pink grapefruit. A fleeting, almost imperceptible wisp of smoke lingers in the background, adding discreet depth and complexity.

Palate: bright, vibrant and finely controlled on the attack. A rich and indulgent fruit spectrum unfolds, combining candied orange peel, tart red currants and juicy wild strawberries, all wrapped in a creamy texture reminiscent of frozen yogurt. Yellow peach adds roundness and a pulpy mouthfeel, while a touch of light cream smooths the structure and enhances overall elegance.

Finish: long, persistent and well structured. Grapefruit zest reappears in a more assertive, gently bitter form, accompanied by warm malty undertones and lingering notes of yellow peach and caramelised pineapple. A final touch of white pepper and citrus peel bitterness brings freshness and harmony to the close.
