We do have cask offers from time to time, be it from something has been matured for awhile or new make spirits going to be filled into the cask etc.. Me too, owing cask and seeing them to mature and bottle when I feel it is ready or just trade them off.

But before owning a cask, do you understand why you want to own a cask?

Of course owing a cask and be able to mature and bottle them one day sounds very romantic, but what is your objective of having one cask?

The final outturns

To bottle with my own label? Are you aware that a hogshead have an outturn of 200+ bottles when you bottle them in 10-20 years. Or even a sherry butt, that is able to gave you 600 ish bottles (even at 20 years!). Now that you are aware of it, so you got a cask and decide to bottle them 10 years later, how are you going to digest a full cask? For sure, you can reach me to help you sell some or you want to trigger a partial bottling to spread out the stress, but just to be aware the amount of bottles you are going to have and the duties you will have to pay afterwards (Duties is by volume & abv x $88, there will be a GST on it).

Potential risk

Now, during storage (the cost of storing cask is the least of your concern, it is only a minimal cost), there might be situation such as leakage, from what I have read at Whisky Broker UK's Facebook post, 1 in 5 cask might have a leakage issue and maybe 1 in 50 cask will leak till empty. Leakage issue ain't covered most of the times. So, another risk to be considered before having one cask.

Re-cask

If you would like to finish the cask in another cask before bottling, it can be arranged but also check to see the cask availability then. And, with a fee from the warehouse side (no mark up from me-at least for now :P)

The costs / potential costs

I will share as much as I can, but do at times there might be some changes, all price are estimated. (No mark up from me-at least for now :P)

Storage- If you ever decide to get a cask, the cask will be shifted to my warehouse (Whisky Broker UK-I have been distributing for their label and also storing my cask there too) or to your bonded warehouse in Scotland. 

Storage cost (in pounds at Whisky Broker UK warehouse): Hogshead/barrel/octaves ~0.32/week, Butts (if they still allows) ~0.6/week

Reguaging (in pounds): 45 pounds

Request for samples: 30 pounds (I strongly encourage you to draw sample yearly, to see how your cask is maturating, but don't draw too frequently, not good)

Bottling- depending on the glassware, standard is ~2.4 pounds/glass ex-VAT

Transferring of DO, IF you are storing at Whisky Broker UK (provided you have an account with them), cask should be able to just go directly under your name. IF you are using another warehouse, just let me know the address.

There will be a situation that if you have no account w bonded warehouse in Scotland, you can park the cask under my account (only if you trust me to do so, as opening account with some warehouse might incurred a fee). But, I advise ya not to do so.

Other potential cost: Non-treated pallet (includes wrapping etc), heated treated of pallet (includes wrapping etc), wax sealing, caramel colouring (I dont think u should do this as well), age certificate (dont be fomo) etc (All these should only be at friction of the cost, not much to worry)

What about logistics

I have shipments from UK from to bring in the brands that I'm distributing, so I can bring yours together (w the whatever fees) or please arrange your own Freight forwarder too, easeir!

Do you have any cask?

Yes, I do actively look for good value cask, I will decide if I should continue to age or bottle them- like the Ledaig 2008/2025 17YO 3MK Bottling. I will offer good value cask to 3MK Whisky Club members as well, from time to time.

>Do you get to taste a cask before choosing them? 

Most of the time nope, especially when some cask are hot picks, I will purchase and draw a sample later.

>What if i'm just getting it as an investment?

From what I understand, investment request a buy & sell progress. A good ending is you manage to find a buyer and sell him the cask at a profit. But most individuals might not have such networks (of course, you might come back and ask 'Kris, can you help me sell this', for sure I can) or some cask drops in prices (which is rather and very unlikely if you get the cask at a good price) but I have to highlight out this you because all investment comes with risk and loss.

>There is also a cask to glass program, so you buy half of the cask and certain price etc (just beware this is more of sharing a cask, the cask is not exclusive to you).
