The Tamnavulin Distillery
Tamnavulin Distillery
Learn about this distillery nestled in the heart of Speyside
History
The Tamnavulin distillery was built in 1966 by the Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Co. Ltd. when there was a great demand in the whisky industry. The purpose of the distillery was to satisfy the growing demand from whisky blenders like Whyte & Mackay, Crawfords and Mackinlay's.
The distillery exchanged hands several times over the years, being owned by Whyte & Mackay then Kyndal International to the United Breweries Group (operated by Whyte & Mackay). Today, Tamnavulin is owned by Alliance Global who purchased Whyte & Mackay in 2014 for £430m.
Tamnavulin closed their doors in 1995 and reopened in 2007 after a major distillery refurbishment to produce the beautiful Tamnavulin Single Malt that we have come to love today!
Produce
The majority of single malts produced by Tamnavulin were made to be used in blends of Whyte & Mackay.
However, over the years Tamnavulin did have several single malt releases that were well received, with the most well known one being the Tamnavulin 12 Year Old.
Tamnavulin's releases as single malts are slowly becoming more popular, be it in the form of their official bottlings or even independent bottlings of their single malts! Definitely a distillery to look forward to in the coming years as they release older age statement single malts.
The Production
Since 2008, Tamnavulin has a production capacity of roughly four million liters per year. The distillery uses water from a natural well, storing it in an underground reservoir. The cooling water comes from the River Livet next to the distillery. Tamnavulin makes big efforts to increase their thermal efficiency and use the intercepted heat of the distilled spirit to heat the new wash.
The following information are obtained from scotchwhisky.com:
The Mashing
Tamnavulin uses a Lauter type mash with a capacity of 10.7 tonnes.
Stills
The spirit still shape used by Tamnavulin is the Lampglass shape, with a total of 6 stills situated in the distillery.
Warehousing
Tamnavulin has two racket warehouses on site with an impressive total of 39,000 casks all racked.
