June Whisky Spotlight: GlenDronach Traditionally Peated

Glendronach Distillery

The Glendronach distillery was founded in 1826 and is the second oldest distillery to apply for a license to legally produce whisky under the Excise Act of 1823.

James Allardes (also commonly known as Allardice) was the one whom founded the distillery and began production at 1826 in Forgue which is located in the Highland whisky region.

In the last two centuries, the distillery has changed hands multiple times, from Teachers and Sons Ltd to Allied DIstillers Limited then to Chivas Brothers Ltd before ending up being solt to the BenRiach Distillery Company.

The Whisky

The distillery has a relatively small production capacity compared to its neighbours, standing at 1.3 million liters.

Glendronach uses the water from the Dronach Burn which lies in the site's grounds.

The distillery was also known to be one of the last to cease using the coal firing methods for its stills.

Glendronach whisky is characteristically robust and fruity, boasting big and bold flavors, most commonly sherried.

Glendronach's core range includes a total of 4 bottles— 12, 15, 18 & 21 year old expressions.

Taste Profile

The Traditionally Peated Glendronach deviates from the commonly sherried Glendronach whiskies. This release is made to  honour The GlenDronach’s early whisky-making heritage. Current Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie crafted this release using the same principles laid down by distillery founder James Allardice.

At the approximately two centuries ago,  it was traditional practice in the Highlands to burn peat in the kiln towards the end of the barley malting, creating a rich and warm, earthy smoke. Thus the name Traditionally Peated.
